The Best Dua for Anxiety and Mental Peace — From Quran and Sunnah

NurPaths · April 2026 · 7 min read

If you’ve been carrying a weight on your chest — a constant hum of worry, racing thoughts that won’t stop, a sadness you can’t explain — know that this is not something Islam ignores. Allah directly addresses the anxious heart in the Quran with a prescription that has worked for 1,400 years.

Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

— Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13:28

This is not poetry. It is a divine statement of cause and effect. Dhikr — remembrance of Allah — is the dua for mental peace that the Creator Himself prescribed.

The Prophet’s Dua for Anxiety and Stress

1. The Master Dua for Anxiety

The Prophet ﷺ taught this comprehensive dua for anyone feeling overwhelmed by worry, stress, or sadness:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ غَلَبَةِ الدَّيْنِ وَقَهْرِ الرِّجَالِ

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from the burden of debt and being overpowered by men.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)

This single dua covers every dimension of anxiety — emotional (worry, grief), physical (weakness, laziness), financial (debt), and social (being overpowered). The Prophet ﷺ used to say it frequently.

2. Istighfar — The Dua That Removes Every Distress

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever makes istighfar constantly, Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress, and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide for him from where he does not expect.” (Abu Dawud)

Simply saying “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness from Allah) repeatedly is one of the most effective duas for anxiety. It works because much of our inner turmoil comes from accumulated sins and spiritual weight that istighfar dissolves.

3. La ilaha illallah — The Dua of Prophet Yunus

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:87)

Prophet Yunus (Jonah) said this dua from the belly of a whale — in the darkest place imaginable. Allah says: “So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.” (21:88). If this dua worked from inside a whale at the bottom of the ocean, it will work for your anxiety too.

4. Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ — The Worry Remover

Ubayy ibn Ka’b asked the Prophet ﷺ how much of his supplication time he should dedicate to salawat. The Prophet eventually told him: “If you dedicate all of your supplication to salawat, then your worries will be taken care of and your sins will be forgiven.” (Tirmidhi)

Saying “Allahumma salli ala Muhammad” is itself a prayer for peace of mind. Each salawat brings 10 blessings from Allah upon you — and those blessings manifest as ease in your specific struggles.

5. Surah Al-Fatiha — The Complete Healing

The Prophet ﷺ called Al-Fatiha “Ar-Ruqyah” — the healing. It is a complete supplication in seven verses that covers praise, seeking guidance, and asking for protection. Reciting it with presence and understanding is a powerful daily practice for depression, sadness, and spiritual heaviness.

Why Dhikr Works for Anxiety — The Islamic Understanding

Ibn al-Qayyim explained that sins and spiritual distance from Allah create “tightness of the chest, anxiety, grief, and fear.” The cure is not just psychological — it is spiritual. When the heart is polished through dhikr and istighfar, the anxiety lifts because its root cause has been treated, not just its symptoms.

This is why the Quran says hearts find rest in dhikr — not in distraction, not in medication alone, not in entertainment. The heart was created to remember its Creator, and when it does, it returns to its natural state of peace.

A Daily Practice for Anxiety Relief

If you’re struggling with anxiety, stress, or depression, try this daily routine grounded entirely in Quran and Sunnah:

Morning: say Astaghfirullah 100 times after Fajr prayer. Before any task that worries you: recite the prophetic supplication for anxiety above. Throughout the day: say Allahumma salli ala Muhammad as often as you can. Before sleep: recite Surah Al-Mulk and the last three surahs, then make the prayer of Prophet Yunus. In moments of panic: repeat La ilaha illallah until the wave passes.

Remember — Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286). If you are struggling, you are strong enough to carry it. And the door of supplication is always open. He is closer to you than your jugular vein.
