The Prophet’s Daily Dhikr Routine — What He ﷺ Said 100 Times Every Day

NurPaths · April 2026 · 7 min read

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the most productive, most peaceful, and most spiritually connected human to ever live. And yet his daily routine was built on something deceptively simple — dhikr. Consistent, structured remembrance of Allah that he never abandoned regardless of how busy, stressed, or tested he was.

If you want to build the same habit, here is exactly what he said, when he said it, and how many times — all from authentic hadith sources.

The Core Daily Adhkar of the Prophet ﷺ

Istighfar — 100 Times Daily

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ
Astaghfirullāh — “I seek forgiveness from Allah”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “By Allah, I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him more than 70 times a day.” In another narration, he said 100 times. Despite being forgiven all sins, he maintained this practice daily — because istighfar is not just for erasing sins. It opens doors of rizq, removes anxiety, heals the heart, and brings peace.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6307

Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi — 100 Times Daily

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ
Subḥānallāhi wa biḥamdih — “Glory be to Allah and praise Him”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever says ‘Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi’ 100 times a day, his sins will be forgiven even if they were like the foam of the sea.” He also said these are “two words beloved to Ar-Rahman, light on the tongue, heavy on the scale.” Each recitation also plants a palm tree for you in Paradise.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6405, 7563

La ilaha illallah — The Greatest Remembrance

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ
Lā ilāha illallāh — “There is no deity except Allah”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best dhikr is La ilaha illallah.” It is the key to Jannah — whoever’s last words are this enters Paradise. It is heavier on the scale than the heavens and the earth. It renews your tawhid with every repetition, stripping false gods (fear, anxiety, people’s opinions) from the heart.
Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3383, Sunan Abi Dawud 3116

Salawat on the Prophet ﷺ

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā Muḥammad — “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad”
One salawat brings 10 blessings from Allah upon you, erases 10 sins, and raises you 10 ranks. When Ubayy asked how much of his supplication to make salawat, the Prophet ﷺ eventually said: all of it. “Then your worries will be taken care of and your sins forgiven.” This is the practice that handles everything.
Sahih Muslim 384, Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3476

When to Say These Adhkar

After Fajr (Morning Adhkar)

The morning is the most powerful time for remembrance. The Prophet ﷺ would sit in his place after Fajr prayer in a state of dhikr until sunrise. This is when you say your morning adhkar including istighfar, tasbih, and the morning protection duas. Allah describes His righteous servants as “those who seek forgiveness in the hours before dawn” (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:18).

After Every Prayer

The Prophet ﷺ said “Astaghfirullah” three times immediately after finishing each of the five daily prayers. He also said Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times after each prayer. The companions would count these on their fingers.

After Maghrib (Evening Adhkar)

The evening adhkar mirror the morning ones. This is your second session of protection and remembrance. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says Subhanallahi wa bihamdihi 100 times morning and evening will come on the Day of Judgment with no one having done better except someone who said the same or more.

Before Sleep

The Prophet ﷺ would recite Surah Al-Mulk, the last two verses of Al-Baqarah, and the last three surahs (Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, An-Nas) before sleeping. He would also say Subhanallah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times — a practice that Fatimah (RA) was taught when she asked for a servant.

Throughout the Day

The Companions reported counting the Prophet ﷺ saying “Astaghfirullah wa atubu ilayh” (I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him) 70 to 100 times in a single sitting. His tongue was always moist with the remembrance of Allah — not just at prescribed times, but constantly.

How to Build This Habit Today

Start small. Pick one dhikr — istighfar is the best starting point — and commit to saying it 100 times after Fajr. Use a counter to track it. Once that feels natural (usually after 2 weeks), add a second dhikr. Build up to all four over the course of a month.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small.” (Sahih al-Bukhari). Consistency matters more than quantity. 100 daily for a year beats 10,000 once and then nothing.
